Show #3 - February 20, 2012

I am blown away how time has flown and that I already have three shows under my belt.

A big thank you goes out to all my listeners and supporters. Your comments, calls, emails, and letters have been wonderful to receive. It is a delight to have a chance to talk to you through the internet airwaves.

One thing that I am noticing about myself as I go through this process is that I tend to gravitate toward being more of a listener than a talker and so I am finding it to be a challenge to sustain myself in speaking mode throughout each show. I have a very busy internal dialogue - which sounds great inside my head - and now that I am speaking out loud I am called upon to be very solid and confident in my process. This is slightly scary for me. I have issues around memory and recall - from an early childhood trauma - so details and facts often are not available off the top of my head, especially if I am nervous or anxious. Therefore I need a script to keep me on track. Yet, when I am reading a script I tend to sound mechanical. Doh! A double edged sword. But, here I am, doing a show called "Finding Your Voice", so in the spirit of walking the walk and talking the talk - I am not going to give up - I am going to persevere in finding my own voice and get through this even if I fumble, crumble, creak, and croak. This is an amazing process and I am glad we are here in it together. Life? We can do this thing!

Transition is always part of life, we are constantly growing, changing, learning, resting, and starting all over again. Balance comes with not holding on too tight and letting a few things go so we are not completely overloaded. You get to choose what to let go of and then relax and let the rest of the journey guide you.

Listening Techniques: “Do you want me to be a sponge or a boomerang?”

Being a sponge would be purely an active listening role, taking it in, and not commenting, criticizing or advising.  Just letting the person vent and get whatever issue it is off their chest.

Being a boomerang is also active listening but with the addition of giving objective feedback andasking clarifying questions to get to the heart of the matter by helping the person flesh outideas, feelings, thoughts, and maybe even make a plan of action.

Whether you are the listener or the talker, these techniques help your thinking, clarity and compassion for yourself and whoever you are talking with.

If you have a question that you would like me to respond to on air you can email me at findingyourvoicewithdjnoni@gmail.com

Prepared, Relaxed, Confident and Ready for Action

As I look forward to starting my radio show "Finding Your Voice" on radio.dominican.edu I am reminded of my own mantra for the coming year, "I am prepared, relaxed, confident and ready for action". I love this mantra. But it has not always been this way for me. While I am what looks like a very put together person, and have my successful moments and relationships, I still have doubtfulness, depression, and uncertainty that crop up from time to time. I've worked diligently over the years to peel away the layers of gunk that stop me from reaching my highest potential and I am most certainly grateful for my life and all that I have, yet, I still have some work to do to morph into the person I am to become while traversing this journey of life. Hence, my radio show is titled "Finding Your Voice".

With "Finding Your Voice" I am putting out there for you what I also need: Encouragement, life skills, connection, discovery, gratefulness and inspiration. And, speaking of gratefulness, I'd like to give a shout out to my fellow radio colleague, DJ Misty, of "The Scoop" which airs on Thursday nights from 7pm-8pm, for letting me sit in with her to learn the ropes of the radio station - fun and elucidating all at once.

It is a delight to be blogging with you and soon to be on the radio, chatting with you all, starting this coming Monday, February 6th, 4pm-5pm, on "Finding Your Voice" at radio.dominican.edu. And, I will be prepared, relaxed, confident, and ready for action. Talk to you soon!
