The technique of  "BookEnding"

BookEnding is when you use a specific begin time and end time for a task or project by using a timer or calling a friend. It can be used for any length of time, but short bursts are usually best (10, 30, 60 minutes)

Get your equipment and supplies ready
Set your timer or call your friend to tell them you are starting
Press the button on the timer and begin your project
Focus on the project and let everything else go
When the timer beeps, finish your last thought, stop what you are doing and put everything away
Call your friend if you are doing that part of it and let them know you are done
Set everything aside if you need to come back to it at another time
And, celebrate that you took care of yourself by concentrating - but not getting bogged down!

Are You Listening?

The topics of this week's broadcast of Finding Your Voice were Listening and Attention

These are two of my favorite topics because I love to listen and I love to give attention - but I also need to learn how to accept getting attention, so I can always use a refresher on the topics myself!

It is important to me to share information that I want to work on myself and that I think might be useful for you to incorporate into your life - so we can all be out there feeling good about ourselves and what we have to offer one another.


Here are some highlights on Listening (as outlined in The Art of Public Speaking by Stephen E. Lucas)

Four Kinds of Listening Skills

  • Appreciative listening - listening for pleasure or enjoyment.
  • Empathic listening - listening to provide emotional support for the speaker.
  • Comprehensive listening - listening to understand the message of a speaker.
  • Critical listening - listening to evaluate a message for purposes of accepting or rejecting the message.
How to be an Active Listener
  • Resist distractions
  • Don't be diverted by appearance or delivery
  • Suspend judgment
  • Focus your listening
    • Listen for main points
    • Listen for evidence
    • Listen for technique
Developing Note-Taking Skills
  • Use the three "Focus your listening" skills to jot brief notes that you can refer to later

About Attention

The need to give and receive attention
Attention is a form of nutrition and without the right quality and quantity we will suffer mental and even physical distress and illness. It's vital to understand the importance of how much and of what quality attention we give and receive in life, if we want to feel happier and have the space in our minds to focus on long term dreams and goals.

Re-evaluation Counseling - learning how to listen, give attention, and receive attention
In its basic form, the practice of Co-Counseling simply consists of two people taking turns listening to each other. It's like a conversation in some ways, but it's different, too. It's a more careful, effective kind of listening. We are talking about listening and paying attention to what you hear. It is thinking about the person who is saying it, and thinking about what he or she is saying, without interrupting the listening by offering suggestions or comments, but simply listening wholeheartedly.
It's simple to get started. It just takes two people. Find a friend (or co-worker or spouse) who will try it with you. Agree that you will take turns listening to each other without interruption for an equal amount of time, and agree how long that time will be. Then decide who is going to listen first. The other person then talks about whatever he or she wants to talk about. The listener just pays attention and doesn't interrupt to give advice or comment or tell how he or she feels.

After the agreed-upon time, the talker becomes the listener, and the one who listened first now talks about anything he or she wants to talk about.

It's a fair exchange. Neither person owes anything to the other. Afterwards, both people usually feel refreshed and think more easily. It's fun, too.


DJ Noni's thoughts on Listening and Attention:

  • When I receive quality attention from someone, I feel heard, I feel loved, and I feel valued.
  • When I am able to provide undivided attention to another person I feel useful and connected.
  • Receiving attention can be a challenge, but once I get into practice it becomes easier and I am more relaxed, especially in a public speaking environment.
DJ Noni's "3 second breather" for public speaking:
  • After you get your gear, visual aids settled in at the lectern or podium.
    • Stand up straight and relaxed
    • Count to three
    • Take a quiet but deep breath in and out
    • Look around the room at the faces to appreciate the attention that is being afforded to you
    • Smile and begin


The group you are speaking to will notice that YOU have noticed they are there and you are silently, but pointedly, acknowledging their presence. You will feel more relaxed and confident throughout your whole speech.
