Gratefulness and Thanks

Today's topic on Finding Your Voice with DJ Noni - Gratefulness and Thanks

Inviting thankfulness into our lives is a way to also bring peace, tranquility, and creativity into our lives as well.

There are many ways to integrate gratefulness into our daily living here are a few:

-Make a "What I am grateful for list"
-Send a Thank You note to someone who made a difference in your life (USMail, Email, Facebook, etc.)
-Make a Thank You phone call or text to a friend or family member for something they have done for you.

Reflecting on "What is good and going well" is another way to invited gratefulness into our lives.
Make a written list (or tell someone in person or on the phone):
-3 things that are good and going well in your life.
-1 challenge that you are experiencing.
-What you can do about that challenge.
-Then go out and do it, keeping in mind that you have many things going well at the same time.

Many blessings and good thoughts go out to all who were affected by Hurricane Sandy, this candle is for you, for any loved ones lost in the storm and its aftermath, and for ancestors long gone, on this day of All Souls Day, November 2, 2012.

DJ Noni - October 26, 2012

Thank you all for listening in  - I love being here for you and letting you know that you have someone on the planet that is thinking well of you.

Some tidbits from today's show:

Angel Card Messages and Power Thought Cards are affirmations meant to inspire healing and healthful thinking toward allowing ourselves to accept the gifts of abundance from the universe.

Our "Angel Card Message":
"Patience"- for others as well as for yourself.
If you would like your own set of Angel Cards you can visit http://www.starmagic.com/Angel-Cards.html

Our "Power Thought Card":
"Loving others is easy when I love and accept myself"
“My heart is open. I allow my love to flow freely. I love myself. I love others and others love me."
For your own set of Power Thought Cards go to http://www.hayhouse.com/details.php?id=290

Personal Productivity

The technique of  "BookEnding"

BookEnding is when you use a specific begin time and end time for a task or project by using a timer or calling a friend. It can be used for any length of time, but short bursts are usually best (10, 30, 60 minutes)

Get your equipment and supplies ready
Set your timer or call your friend to tell them you are starting
Press the button on the timer and begin your project
Focus on the project and let everything else go
When the timer beeps, finish your last thought, stop what you are doing and put everything away
Call your friend if you are doing that part of it and let them know you are done
Set everything aside if you need to come back to it at another time
And, celebrate that you took care of yourself by concentrating - but not getting bogged down!

You can do it!!!

Personal Health

If you are struggling with eating, weight, and getting into an exercise program - there is help.
Your doctor can guide you to a good nutritional plan and help you get the right exercise plan as well.
You can also find emotional, spiritual, and physical support at:
OA.org  -- Overeaters Anonymous  and foodaddicts.org -- someone is always there for you.

And again, YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Many blessings and good thoughts coming your way.

Talk to you next week on Finding Your Voice with DJ Noni, 2-4pm on radio.dominican.edu

Are You Listening?

The topics of this week's broadcast of Finding Your Voice were Listening and Attention

These are two of my favorite topics because I love to listen and I love to give attention - but I also need to learn how to accept getting attention, so I can always use a refresher on the topics myself!

It is important to me to share information that I want to work on myself and that I think might be useful for you to incorporate into your life - so we can all be out there feeling good about ourselves and what we have to offer one another.

Here are some highlights on Listening (as outlined in The Art of Public Speaking by Stephen E. Lucas)

Four Kinds of Listening Skills

  • Appreciative listening - listening for pleasure or enjoyment.
  • Empathic listening - listening to provide emotional support for the speaker.
  • Comprehensive listening - listening to understand the message of a speaker.
  • Critical listening - listening to evaluate a message for purposes of accepting or rejecting the message.
How to be an Active Listener
  • Resist distractions
  • Don't be diverted by appearance or delivery
  • Suspend judgment
  • Focus your listening
    • Listen for main points
    • Listen for evidence
    • Listen for technique
Developing Note-Taking Skills
  • Use the three "Focus your listening" skills to jot brief notes that you can refer to later

About Attention

The need to give and receive attention
Attention is a form of nutrition and without the right quality and quantity we will suffer mental and even physical distress and illness. It's vital to understand the importance of how much and of what quality attention we give and receive in life, if we want to feel happier and have the space in our minds to focus on long term dreams and goals.

Re-evaluation Counseling - learning how to listen, give attention, and receive attention
In its basic form, the practice of Co-Counseling simply consists of two people taking turns listening to each other. It's like a conversation in some ways, but it's different, too. It's a more careful, effective kind of listening. We are talking about listening and paying attention to what you hear. It is thinking about the person who is saying it, and thinking about what he or she is saying, without interrupting the listening by offering suggestions or comments, but simply listening wholeheartedly.
It's simple to get started. It just takes two people. Find a friend (or co-worker or spouse) who will try it with you. Agree that you will take turns listening to each other without interruption for an equal amount of time, and agree how long that time will be. Then decide who is going to listen first. The other person then talks about whatever he or she wants to talk about. The listener just pays attention and doesn't interrupt to give advice or comment or tell how he or she feels.

After the agreed-upon time, the talker becomes the listener, and the one who listened first now talks about anything he or she wants to talk about.

It's a fair exchange. Neither person owes anything to the other. Afterwards, both people usually feel refreshed and think more easily. It's fun, too.

DJ Noni's thoughts on Listening and Attention:

  • When I receive quality attention from someone, I feel heard, I feel loved, and I feel valued.
  • When I am able to provide undivided attention to another person I feel useful and connected.
  • Receiving attention can be a challenge, but once I get into practice it becomes easier and I am more relaxed, especially in a public speaking environment.
DJ Noni's "3 second breather" for public speaking:
  • After you get your gear, visual aids settled in at the lectern or podium.
    • Stand up straight and relaxed
    • Count to three
    • Take a quiet but deep breath in and out
    • Look around the room at the faces to appreciate the attention that is being afforded to you
    • Smile and begin

The group you are speaking to will notice that YOU have noticed they are there and you are silently, but pointedly, acknowledging their presence. You will feel more relaxed and confident throughout your whole speech.

Show #12 - April 23, 2012

Today is a line of demarcation from where we began to where we are going next. I’ll be reviewing all the Angel Messages and Power Thoughts that I have shared this far, and I’ll play music that I saved up in between.

Our Angel Message this week is “synthesis”

The dictionary definition of synthesis is: The creation of an integrated whole by the combining of separate materials or abstract entities.

A beautiful quote on synthesis:

“Love is the affinity which links and draws together the elements of the world... Love, in fact, is the agent of universal synthesis.”

Power Thought of this week:

“My future is glorious. This is a new day, one that I have never lived before. I live in limitless love, light, and creativity – and I enjoy every moment. All is well in my world.”

Quote of this week:

“We want a society in which making it better for ourselves make it better for everybody.” Tim Jackins

All of these messages are meant for you to hear and use in your life let them into your heart and souls for encouragement and empowerment.

Some personal thoughts:

When I was originally thinking about the title and topic for this show I realized that striving to inspire and empower others to find their voices would be an equally valuable exercise to do for myself as well.

I am grateful for college radio as a welcoming environment for this experiment, but I am particularly grateful that you have been out there listening and encouraging me, it has been a super fun ride talking to you all these weeks, and you have given me a community where I could test my thinking and practice my own critical thinking and life skills along the way.

Lastly, I realize that this can sound corny at times, but I am truly grateful to the universe for the gifts of family, friendship, mentors, and the immense love that is out there in the world.

Thank you!

I'll be back on the radio in the fall semester - I'll keep you posted as to show times and dates.

Show #11 - April 16, 2012

This week's Angel Message is: Sustainability - inspired by http://www.olliesworld.com/

Sustainability is the quality of stewardship and the capacity to endure by stepping up to reduce, reuse, recycle,  and rethink our actions in the areas of waste, water, energy, air, biodiversity, and our community at large.

Here are a few words of wisdom on sustainability:

“The very process of the restoring the land to health is the process through which we become attuned to Nature and, through Nature, with ourselves.”
~Chris Maser, Forest Primeval

“I know of no restorative of heart, body, and soul more effective against hopelessness than the restoration of the Earth.”
~Barry Lopez, Helping Nature Heal

"There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed."
~Mohandas K. Gandhi

“The best investment on earth is earth.” ~Louis J. Glickman

“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”
~Native American Proverb

“The earth is what we all have in common.” ~Wendell Barry

“He who plants a tree, Plants a hope.” ~Lucy Larcom

This week’s Power Thought, inspired by Louise L. Hay is:

There is a rhythm and flow to Life and I am part of it. There is plenty for everyone, including me, to have and share. I am a thoughtful steward and my good comes from everywhere, everyone, and everything. I love life.

Earthday is coming up on Sunday, April 22nd, 2012

Show #10 - April 9, 2012

I have just returned from an emotional, physical, and spiritual journey to Tijuana, Mexico, where I was part of a group of people helping build homes for families along the Mexico/United States border.

I wish that this kind of service work would not be needed, but the reality is that there are many families, not only in Mexico, but also all over the world, living in substandard conditions – and who cannot on their own afford to change their living circumstances.

Perhaps if the world were organized differently there wouldn’t be a need to go out on mission trips to help people in this way, but until that time I am committed to helping families stay together by building safe, secure homes.

I am grateful to be able to do this work and to encourage others to participate as well.

Thank you to my family, friends, listeners, and supporters for encouraging me to live a life of service.

In dedication to cross-cultural understanding and compassion toward one another, this week's Angel Message is: "Community Service" - Good deeds done for others.

Here is a thought on community service from Fred Rogers, American Educator, Presbyterian Minister, and Television Host of Mister Roger’s Neighborhood:

"At the center of the universe is a loving heart that continues to beat and that wants the best for every person. Anything we can do to help foster the intellect and spirit and emotional growth of our fellow human beings, that is our job. Those of us who have this particular vision must continue against all odds. Life is for service."

This week's Power Thought, inspired by http://www.self-help-and-self-development.com is:

When my intentions are clear, the Universe cooperates with me and I can accomplish anything. I live in peace and harmony with nature, myself, and my neighbors near and far. I am grateful for all I have, what I can share, and all I am about to receive.

Food Sovereignty Movement:

The Principles of Food Sovereignty
Food is a basic human right.
The land belongs to those who work it.
Food sovereignty entails the sustainable care and use of natural resources.
Food is first and foremost a source of nutrition and only secondarily an item for trade.
A strictly enforced Code of Conduct for Multinational Corporations is needed.
Food must not be used as a weapon.
Smallholder farmers must have direct input into formulating agricultural policies at all levels.
Everyone has the right to honest, accurate information and open democratic decision-making free from all forms of discrimination.

Mid Semester Break & Community Service Work

"I am only one, but I am one.  I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do." - Edward Everett Hale/quotegarden.com

Show #9 - March 26, 2012

On this week's show I started out with thanks and gratefulness for nature and the recent rains that have showered Marin County with a much needed drink of water.

Here is the Irish Blessing that went along with my note of gratefulness:

May the raindrops fall lightly on your brow;
May the soft winds freshen your spirit;
May the sunshine brighten your heart;
May the burdens of the day rest lightly upon you;
And may God enfold you in the mantle of His love.
                                        From the book, Irish Blessings

This week's Angel Card Message: Forgiveness

On the flip side of forgiveness is the making of mistakes. Here are some quotes on mistakes:

"Do not take yourself too seriously. You have to learn not to be dismayed at making mistakes. No human being can avoid failures." Lawrence G. Lovasik

"If you have the guts to keep making mistakes, your wisdom and intelligence leap forward with huge momentum." Holly Near

"Even the knowledge of my own fallibility cannot keep me from making mistakes. Only when I fail do I get up again." Vincent Van Gogh

This week's Power Thought Card:
"I am willing to forgive. Forgiveness of myself and others releases me from the past. Forgiveness is the answer to almost every problem. Forgiveness is a gift to myself. I forgive, and I set myself free." Louise L. Hay

Forgiveness according to the Mayo Clinic
http://mayoclinic.com/health/forgiveness/MH00131
-Nearly everyone has been hurt by the actions or words of others.
-Wounds can leave you bitter, angry, and resentful.
-Forgiveness can be a challenge and is also a commitment to change from the inside out.
-By embracing forgiveness you can embrace peace, hope, gratitude and joy.
-Forgiveness can lead you down the path of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

On Forgiveness From DJ Noni:
Here are some words you can use for asking for forgiveness, feel free to add specific information that pertains to your situation to personalize it and make it authentic and sincere.

To my dear friend, I am so very sorry for hurting you by my actions and/or words. It breaks my heart that I have hurt you and I hope you have space in your heart to forgive me. Going forward I commit to you to not do it again to you, or to anyone else, and I thank you for giving me this time to apologize and ask for your forgiveness.

-Whether the person you are asking forgiveness of bestows it upon you or not, your efforts will go along way to give you relief.
-You can ask for or give forgiveness to someone even if they have passed on or are not available for you to speak directly with them.

Show #8 - March 19, 2012

I am thoroughly enjoying my work at Dominican University's radio station, radio.dominican.edu.

Every aspect of the job is fascinating and interesting; research, pre and post production, air time, responding to letters from listeners and talking to callers, technical trouble shooting, photography, station maintenance, listening to all the shows for FCC compliance, reviewing DJ Blogs, writing job descriptions and station reports, assisting the station manager/class instructor, and assisting and encouraging my fellow DJs. I love it!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to everyone for your interest, encouragement and support and I look forward to sharing more time with you on Finding Your Voice with DJ Noni, Mondays, 4pm-5pm, on radio.dominican.edu

Here are some tidbits from today's show:

Angel Message - Efficiency
"Ability to accomplish a job with a minimum expenditure of time and effort." dictionary.reference.com

Power Thought Message - from bmindful.com/affirmations/work
"I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. My work is recognized positively, my opinion is valued, and I possess an endless supply of creativity, energy and knowledge for any project that I take on."

Getting Things Done - Summarized from Dustin M. Wax lifehack.org
1. Do Most Important Tasks first.
2. Do 10 minutes of work, then rest for 2 minutes.
3. Focus on just the next action instead of the whole project.
4. Slow down. Take care of yourself.
5. Do similar tasks together.
6. Create personal privacy space with earphones.
7. Write details, appointments, and notes down to free your brain for thinking.
8. Make good use of Gap Time and do little tasks (write a quick thank you note, organize your wallet, read a chapter in a boo, clean out a  desk drawer).

How To Make a "To Do" List - by DJ Noni
-Your "To Do" list can be handwritten or electronic - do what works best for you.
-Be detailed and specific.
-Break projects down into smaller bites.
-Review your list regularly.
-It is okay to drop things off the list if you are just not getting them done.

Show #7 - March 12, 2012

This week I started my show with a word of gratefulness to the universe for my ability to exercise and move my body. I do not say this lightly because I would prefer to do absolutely nothing - BUT, when I do get out there, it ends up feeling great – some activities that I enjoy are walking, biking, snowshoeing, and gardening.  Even on the days that I find it hard to get up and get out there to exercise, I am reminded how valuable and important it is to infuse my body with energy. Thank you, thank you, thank you for energy to exercise and move my body!

My wish for you is that no matter where you are or what your capabilities, that you have some way to flex your muscles, energize your body, and get out there and move around. If you need help doing it, make a call – but get out there - and while you are at it, exercise your freedom of speech as well!

And, even though I may not know you personally, I care for your well being, and I care for the well being of all people on the planet, and that is why I am here rooting for all of us to have good physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Life? We can do this thing!!

Professional Etiquette Tips for Networking and Business Meals
As shared by Syndi Seid, Professional Etiquette Coach, at Dominican University's Professional Etiquette Dinner, sponsored by the Career and Internship Department.

Highlights for Networking:
1. Pre-plan your wardrobe and your driving directions at least a day before.
2. Write your full name in block letters on your name tag and place it on your upper right shoulder.
3. Arrive on time (not to early and certainly not late)
4. Confidently introduce yourself with a brief statement of your name and what you do/your company name.
5. Firm, brief handshake (no limp fish or vice grip squeeze)

Highlights for Professional Table Manners:
1. Refrain from drinking alcohol - especially if it is an interview meal
2. Enter and exit your chair from the right.
3. At the table, your bread plate is on the left and drink glasses are on the right.
4. When you are finished eating place your fork and knife in the "10:20" position to signal you are done.
5. At the end of your meal, before you stand up, place your napkin, gently folded, on the table to the left of your plate, and after you stand up, push your chair in.

"What To Do When You Don't Know What To Do"
Summarized from the personal blog of Michael Hyatt, Chairman of Thomas Nelson Publishers
http://michaelhyatt.com/

Just do the next right thing.
1. Forget about the ultimate outcome - many variables will change along the way - let go of it.
2. Focus on the next right action - what small thing that you can do will keep your project moving?
3. Do something now - something is better than nothing.

From our call in listener, James, of Petaluma
1. Step Back and take a breath for perspective.
2. Break the project/worry down into smaller, more manageable chunks.
3. Call in your support system (family, friends, professionals) who can either listen without fixing or who can give thoughtful, relevant, and non-judgmental advice.
